During Catholic Education Week, Canadian Martyrs Catholic Elementary School in Newmarket made a commitment to live the Gospel mission by empowering a class of students in the Dominican Republic.

Canadian Martyrs students and staff are sponsoring this class through The Good Samaritan Foundation, which aids the poorest people in the Dominican Republic. Specifically, Canadian Martyrs will be sponsoring a class at the Asher School, in Puerto Plata, which provides education and meals to underprivileged children, many of whom are Haitian refugees.

Instead of sponsoring individual children, Canadian Martyrs is sponsoring an entire class to ensure no child is left behind. This costs $1,200 per month – or roughly $2.75 per child per day – and covers the teacher’s salary, utilities and a daily meal for each student.

During Catholic Education Week, Canadian Martyrs teacher Ms. Santos and Leslie from The Good Samaritan presented information about this initiative to staff and students. Ms. Santos will also travel to the Asher School this summer to teach a class thanks to the support of the entire Canadian Martyrs community, and in particular, teachers Mr. Sanderson and Mr. Samaha.
